Artist Spotlight, Wombat Workshop
PoCo Inspired: Tell us a bit about yourself
Wombat Workshop: My name is Alyson. I am originally from New Brunswick, but have also made my home in Ontario, Alberta, and now Manitoba. I have a background in Biology and Health Care, but have always had a love for art in many forms. I am a self-taught artist, and macramé is my most recent passion. I live with my wonderful partner of 15 years, and our two cats, Finn and June.
PoCo Inspired: When did you first start making jewellery and what was the first piece you ever made?
Wombat Workshop: I started teaching myself macramé about 5 years ago, but only got started with micro-macramé jewellery in the past year or so.

PoCo Inspired: What inspires your creativity when making a new piece?
Wombat Workshop: I have a back-ground in Biology, and have always loved all things related to nature and the natural world. So, I seem to be drawn to designs that feel like they could be from nature -- plant-like, organic, etc. But really, anything that my brain finds beautiful and/or whimsical, I'm inspired by it!

PoCo Inspired: What is the single most important skill you have learned and why?
Wombat Workshop: I think because I am self-taught, my most important skill is openness to learning, an inquisitive mind, and the ability to observe and learn new skills.

PoCo Inspired: What challenges do you face in your work?
Wombat Workshop: My two self-appointed workshop assistants also happen to be cats. When your main medium is basically string, it's hard to avoid feline involvement -- which is both a challenge and a joy. ;)

PoCo Inspired: What is your biggest achievement so far in your business?
Wombat Workshop: I'm still pretty small when it comes to the business side of things, but it has taken a long time for me to put myself out there and show what I can do. So I think that's my biggest achievement so far.
